Best Outdoor Photoshoot Locations in Peoria & Central Illinois

If you’ve ever booked a session and thought, “Okay but where do we actually take photos?” - you’re not alone. Location matters. A lot. And not in a trendy-for-two-weeks way, but in a way that makes your photos still hit years from now.

I photograph families, couples, maternity, branding, and honestly just real humans being themselves all over Peoria and Central Illinois, and there are a handful of outdoor spots I come back to again and again. Not because they’re overdone, but because they work. The light behaves. The space gives us room to breathe. And the photos always come out strong.

Here are my go-to outdoor locations, why I love them, and how I decide which one is right for your session.

Donovan Park – Soft Light + Open Space

Donovan Park is hands-down my most-used location, and it’s not by accident. It’s easy to get to, easy to move around, and it gives us options, which matters more than people realize during a session.

There are open fields with tall grass, wildflowers that change throughout the year, genuinely pretty trees, and even a pond if we want water in the background. The light here is forgiving, too. There’s plenty of shade, which means no harsh shadows and no squinting faces, even on brighter days.

This spot works especially well for:

  • Families with younger kids

  • Couples who want something relaxed and natural

  • Maternity sessions that need space and movement

Nothing about this park feels stiff or forced. We can walk, stop, reset, let kids move, and keep things flowing instead of rushing. And yes—there’s even a sandbox play area nearby, which makes for an excellent post-session bribe for little ones.

It photographs beautifully in every season, and it’s one of those places where sessions just… work.

ICC Disc Golf Course – Woodsy + Textured

If you’re craving something more earthy and grounded, the ICC Disc Golf Course is such a good option. There are areas with tall pine trees that create the prettiest shady, forest-style look—especially if you want something that feels different from open fields and wide skies.

This location is great for:

  • Couples sessions

  • Maternity photos

  • Anyone wanting a switch-up in vibe with a more outdoorsy, lifestyle feel

The trees add so much depth without things feeling busy, and the shade keeps the light soft and flattering. It has a very calm, natural energy that works beautifully for sessions that lean more documentary and less posed.

It can be a busier area at times since it’s an active disc golf course, so we occasionally pause to let people play through—but it’s never a big deal and never takes long. And honestly? The photos are always worth it.

Cooper Park – Clean, Simple, Timeless

Cooper Park is such a good option if you want something that feels a little more summer-coded. It has river beach access, which means barefoot moments, sandy toes, and that relaxed, end-of-summer energy that just hits different.

There are also pockets of taller grass and wildflowers, so you still get that natural look—just without the very traditional Illinois cornfield vibe. It’s a great middle ground if you want something outdoorsy but a little unexpected.

This spot works really well for:

  • Summer family sessions

  • Couples who want something laid-back and playful

  • Anyone wanting a totally different look from open fields

It’s relaxed, it’s casual, and it gives your gallery a vibe that stands out without trying too hard.

ICC Botanical Gardens – Floral + Intentional

ICC Botanical Gardens is one of those locations that feels calm the second you step into it. It’s landscaped, yes—but not in a way that feels overly formal or forced. Think lush greenery, seasonal flowers, open grassy areas, and these really pretty walkways and structures that frame moments without stealing the show.

What I love most about this space is how varied it is. We can move from floral backdrops to open lawn to shaded paths without ever feeling like we’re repeating the same look. It photographs beautifully in motion—walking, holding hands, scooping up kids, laughing mid-step.

This location works especially well for:

  • Families who want color without chaos

  • Maternity sessions that feel soft and natural

  • Branding sessions that want something clean, warm, and intentional

The light here is gentle, the backgrounds stay uncluttered, and the whole space has this peaceful, easy energy that lets people relax into the moment. It’s polished without being stiff—and that balance is hard to find.

McNaughton Park – Nature Without Trying Too Hard

McNaughton Park is a solid, no-frills option if you want something straightforward and versatile. It’s got trees, some pond areas, and depending on the time of year, even hay bales that let us lean into a more country look without fully committing to a rural session.

This location works well for:

  • Families who want a classic outdoor setting

  • Couples who like a relaxed, casual vibe

  • Sessions where we want a mix of greenery and open space

It’s not overly styled, which honestly can be a good thing. The simplicity gives us room to focus on connection, movement, and real moments without the background doing too much. Easy, flexible, and dependable.

What About Studio Sessions?

Outdoor sessions aren’t the only option - and sometimes, they’re not the best option.

All of my studio sessions are hosted at Studio On Sampson, and I’ll be honest: it’s a dream space. Clean, bright, neutral, and intentionally designed to photograph beautifully. It also offers a variety of posing chairs / backdrops + rooms!

Studio sessions are perfect if you:

  • Want full control over light and weather

  • Are booking branding photos

  • Prefer a more editorial or polished look

  • Don’t want to worry about wind, heat, or bugs

I often recommend studio sessions for newborns, branding, boudoir and intimate family sessions where connection matters more than space.
