a quiet morning with two very tiny people

this session took place on a slow morning in my studio just outside peoria, illinois. the kind of morning where there’s no rush to be anywhere else, where the goal is simply to take care of what’s in front of you. in this case, that meant two newborn girls who were very small, very new, and very clear about their boundaries.

they were twins, and they made one thing known immediately. they did not want to be snuggled up together.

every time we tried to gently bring them close, there were tiny punches thrown. arms flying. little bodies saying “no thank you” in the only way they knew how. and honestly, it made me smile. because even at just days old, they were already showing personality. already different. already themselves.

this is the part of newborn sessions you don’t always see online. the adjusting. the pausing. the listening. especially with twins, it’s rarely quiet or still for long.

what a twin newborn session actually looks like

this was a full newborn session, indoors, in my studio. two babies means double the feeding, double the soothing, and a whole lot of patience. the space stayed busy the entire time. hands moving. parents stepping in and out. one baby settling while the other needed a reset.

nothing about it felt stiff or overly controlled. and that’s intentional.

i photograph newborns in a documentary, lifestyle way because i don’t believe babies need to perform to be worthy of being remembered. i don’t force closeness when it’s not there. i don’t rush parents through feeds or calming breaks. i let the session breathe and unfold the way it needs to.

with these girls, that meant honoring the fact that they were tiny but mighty and very opinionated about personal space.

letting babies lead instead of forcing a moment

we adjusted. we photographed them separately when that made the most sense. we tried closeness again later. we paid attention to their cues instead of pushing for a specific image.

and in between the fussing and the tiny arm swings, we captured something real.

their size. how small they were in their parents’ hands. the way their features already differed. the beginning of a relationship that didn’t need to look perfect to be meaningful.

this is something i talk about a lot with families, especially those coming in worried about how their session will go. babies don’t need to be calm the entire time for the photos to matter. toddlers don’t need to behave. siblings don’t need to be affectionate on command.

my job isn’t to create perfection. it’s to document what’s actually happening in front of me, with care and intention.

for parents wondering if this style is right for them

if you’re a parent reading this and wondering whether i’m your person, here’s what i want you to know.

i expect newborn sessions to be a little unpredictable. i plan for feeds, fussiness, and breaks. i don’t measure success

by how sleepy your baby is or how closely they follow a pose. especially for families with multiples or very young children,

my focus is always on making the experience calm and supportive, even when the room itself feels busy.

this session in my peoria-area studio is a perfect example of that. two newborn girls who didn’t want what we

initially had planned, and a set of images that still tell the truth of who they were at the very beginning.

why i keep my newborn sessions simple and honest

i photograph families all over peoria and central illinois, but studio newborn sessions will always hold a special place for me. they strip everything back. no weather concerns. no distractions. just your family, your baby, and a quiet space to document something that goes by faster than anyone expects.

with twins, that first stretch is especially intense. everything is doubled, including the emotions. having images that reflect what it really felt like, not just what it looked like on a good moment, matters more than most people realize at the time.
