Why You Don't Need Perfectly Behaved Kids for Beautiful Family Photos
(Especially If You Have Boys)
By HM Photography | Family Photographer in Peoria, Illinois
A confession?
If you apologize for your kids before your family session even starts, you're in very good company.
Actually...you're probably like 90% of the parents I photograph.
I hear it all the time.
"He's probably going to be crazy."
"She never smiles for pictures."
"They're going to fight the entire time."
"Good luck."
Meanwhile, I'm standing there thinking...
"Perfect."
Not because I enjoy chaos (okay...sometimes I kind of do), but because I've learned something after photographing hundreds of families across Peoria, Morton, Washington, Pekin, Metamora, Dunlap, Bloomington-Normal, and the rest of Central Illinois.
The kids everyone worries about the most?
They're usually the ones who create the best galleries.
Not because they suddenly become tiny models.
Because they stay kids.
And that's exactly what makes the photos work.
Your Kids Don't Have To Perform
Somewhere along the way, family pictures became this weird event where parents feel like their children have to audition for the role of "perfect family."
Everyone has to smile.
Everyone has to look at the camera.
Nobody can get dirty.
Nobody can run.
Nobody can laugh too hard.
Nobody can make goofy faces.
Honestly?
That sounds exhausting.
Kids don't naturally connect by standing shoulder-to-shoulder staring into a camera.
They connect by chasing each other.
By wrestling.
By whispering jokes.
By climbing all over mom.
By making ridiculous faces just to make their sibling laugh.
Those are the moments that tell me who your family actually is.
Boy Moms...I See You.
There's something wonderfully chaotic about photographing little boys.
One minute they're hugging their brother.
The next minute they're pretending to tackle him.
Five seconds later they're making the most unhinged face you've ever seen.
And then—without anyone asking—they wrap their arms around mom because they still secretly love being close to her.
That's exactly why I love photographing them.
You don't have to force connection.
It's already there.
You just have to create enough space for it to happen naturally.
Some of my favorite images aren't planned at all.
They're the split-second hugs.
The quick glance between brothers.
The way one child instinctively reaches for mom without even thinking about it.
You can't pose those moments.
You notice them.
The Best Photos Usually Happen
Between The Poses
Don't get me wrong.
We'll absolutely grab the Christmas-card photo where everyone's looking at the camera.
Grandma deserves one.
So do you.
But once we've checked that box?
That's when the fun starts.
I'll have your kids race each other.
I'll tell them terrible jokes.
I'll probably ask someone to make the silliest face possible.
I'll have brothers squeeze each other until someone starts laughing.
I'll let your kids move.
Because kids are supposed to move.
When they stop worrying about doing everything "right," that's usually when the magic—not the cheesy Pinterest kind, the real kind—starts happening.
Parents almost always tell me afterward,
"That was way easier than I expected."
Good.
It should be.
The Biggest Myth About Family Photos
One of the biggest misconceptions I hear is this:
"We'll wait until they're older."
Can I gently tell you why I don't love that idea?
Because your kids aren't difficult.
They're just kids.
Waiting doesn't necessarily make sessions easier.
Toddlers become preschoolers.
Preschoolers become elementary school kids.
Elementary school kids become teenagers who suddenly don't want to hug mom anymore.
Every stage comes with its own personality.
Its own challenges.
Its own sweetness.
There isn't some magical age where children suddenly become perfect at family pictures.
There is only now.
And now is pretty wonderful.
Moms...You Belong In The Frame
Can I say something directly to the moms reading this?
Please stop waiting until you've lost the weight.
Or your hair grows out.
Or your skin clears up.
Or life calms down.
Because I promise you...
Your kids aren't looking at any of those things.
They're looking at you.
They're remembering how your hand fit around theirs.
How you laughed.
How you hugged them.
How safe they felt sitting next to you.
The older I get—and the more families I photograph—the more convinced I become that moms are almost always the ones missing from their own family history.
You're usually behind the camera.
Taking the picture.
Fixing everyone's shirts.
Making sure everyone else looks good.
You deserve to exist in your family's story too.
Not someday.
Now.
Family Sessions Aren't About Perfect Behavior
When families book me, I don't expect perfectly behaved children.
I expect children.
I expect someone to get distracted by a bug.
Someone to ask if we're done yet.
Someone to trip over absolutely nothing.
Someone to make a face that belongs in a meme.
And honestly...
I love all of it.
Because years from now, those little personalities are what you'll miss.
Not whether every collar was laying perfectly.
Not whether everyone smiled exactly the same way.
You'll remember who they were.
And that's what I want your gallery to reflect.
Choosing the Right Location
Matters More Than You Think
One of the reasons I love photographing families outdoors around Central Illinois is because the environment does half the work for us.
Whether we're wandering through a quiet park in Peoria, exploring open fields near Morton, finding golden evening light in Washington, or heading toward one of my favorite tucked-away spots in Pekin or Metamora, kids naturally relax when they have room to move.
Instead of asking them to sit still for an hour, I let the location become part of the experience.
We walk.
We play.
We stop whenever the light is beautiful.
Those little transitions between spots often end up creating some of my favorite images of the entire session.
Parents are usually surprised by how little posing is actually involved.
The session feels more like spending an evening together than standing through a photoshoot.
And that's exactly how I want it to feel.
What Happens During a Family
Session With Me
If you've never had professional family photos before—or if your last experience left you sweating because everyone was stressed—here's what you can actually expect.
We'll start by easing into things with a few classic portraits. Nothing stiff, nothing awkward. Just enough to get everyone comfortable and grab those photos you'll want to frame.
After that?
We move.
I'll give prompts instead of rigid poses.
I'll ask your kids questions.
We'll play games.
We'll walk.
We'll laugh.
If your child needs a snack break, we take one.
If someone needs a minute, we take a minute.
If your kids decide they're fascinated by sticks, flowers, or bugs...we'll probably use that to our advantage.
My goal isn't to control your family.
It's to photograph your family.
Exactly as they are.
Why These Photos Matter More Than You Think
One day, your kids won't fit in your lap anymore.
One day, they'll stop reaching for your hand without thinking.
One day, the silly faces, bear hugs, and constant chatter will quietly become stories you tell instead of moments you live every day.
I'm not trying to make you emotional...
Okay, maybe just a little.
But that's why I believe in family photography.
Not because life has to be perfect before you schedule it.
Because life keeps moving whether you're ready or not.
The little things that feel ordinary today become the things you'll miss the most.
That's why I photograph them.
Not just the smiles.
The personalities.
The connection.
The season of life you're in right now.
Ready for Family Photos in Central Illinois?
If you've been putting off family photos because your kids are "too wild," consider this your permission to stop waiting.
Bring the silly faces.
Bring the endless energy.
Bring the brothers who can't stop wrestling for five minutes.
Bring the kids who would rather explore than pose.
I'll take care of the rest.
If you're looking for a family photographer in Peoria, Morton, Washington, Dunlap, Pekin, Metamora, Bloomington-Normal, or anywhere throughout Central Illinois, I'd love to help you create a gallery that actually looks like your family—not a version of your family pretending to be someone else.
Because the best photos have never started with perfect behavior.
They've always started with showing up.
