There’s something about that first real stretch of warm weather that just hits different.
Like… the kind where you step outside and don’t immediately regret it. The grass finally starts turning green again, the trees wake up a little, and everything feels lighter. You can tell people have been waiting for it too — suddenly parks are full again, people are out walking, and there’s just this quiet shift in energy that you can’t really explain, but you can definitely notice.
That’s exactly what this session felt like.
This maternity session took place at Donovan Park here in Peoria, Illinois — one of my go-to spots when we’re in that weird in-between season where not everything is fully bloomed yet, but we finally have life coming back into the landscape. The mix of tall pines, open space, and soft light makes it such an easy win, especially for sessions like this where we just want things to feel natural and not overdone.
And honestly? That’s the goal every time.
I don’t want your photos to feel stiff or overly posed. I want them to feel like you. Like something you’ll look back on and immediately remember what that season of life actually looked like.
And this one… this one was exactly that.
From the second we started, it just flowed. No awkwardness, no overthinking — just the two of them being excited, a little nervous, and completely wrapped up in this new chapter they’re about to step into. You can see it in the way they look at each other, the way he instinctively reaches for her, the way she holds her belly without even thinking about it.
Those are the moments I’m always watching for.
Not the perfect pose. Not the Pinterest version. The real version.
One of my favorite things about maternity sessions — especially outdoors like this — is how relaxed everything feels. There’s room to move, to walk, to laugh, to take a second if needed. We’re not confined to a space or rushing through a checklist. It gives us the chance to create images that actually feel like a memory instead of something staged.
And when you pair that with golden, early spring light?
Game over.
That soft warmth hitting through the trees, the shadows on the ground, the subtle greens starting to come through — it creates this kind of dreamy, effortless look that you just can’t fake.
Also… can we talk about how good simple outfits photograph?
A fitted neutral dress, jeans, soft textures — that’s it. Nothing overcomplicated, nothing distracting. Just clean, timeless, and focused on what actually matters. This is exactly why I always tell my clients not to overthink wardrobe. The more “you” it feels, the better your photos are going to turn out.
And these? These are going to age so well.
The kind of images that don’t feel tied to a trend. The kind you print, hang in your home, and still love years from now when that tiny baby you’re waiting on is suddenly running around your living room.
That’s the whole point.
Because at the end of the day, this season doesn’t last long.
Pregnancy feels like it drags on forever when you’re in it — your body hurts, you’re tired, everything feels uncomfortable — but once it’s over, it’s over. And the only thing you really have left from it (besides your baby, obviously) are the memories… and your photos.
That’s why I care so much about documenting it the right way.
Not just “here’s what you looked like pregnant,” but “here’s what this felt like.” The excitement. The anticipation. The quiet in-between before everything changes.
If you’re even slightly considering maternity photos — this is your sign to do it.
Especially in the spring.
Central Illinois winters are long, gray, and honestly… kind of brutal. So when we finally get that first stretch of beautiful weather, you have to take advantage of it. These early spring sessions are some of my favorites because everything feels fresh again. It’s not overly busy yet, the light is soft, and the colors are just starting to come back to life.
It’s the perfect reset.
And if you’re local to Peoria, Washington, Morton, or anywhere in Central Illinois — you have so many beautiful options right now. Parks like Donovan are ideal for this exact kind of session: open, calm, natural, and just enough texture to make everything look intentional without trying too hard.
If you’re wanting photos that feel like this — relaxed, connected, and actually true to who you are — I’d love to document this season for you.
Whether it’s maternity, couples, or just because you want updated photos that don’t feel forced, this is what I’m here for.
You don’t need a special occasion.
You just need a reason to remember this version of your life.
And trust me… this version is worth remembering.
